JAZZ THEATRE: AFTER MIDNIGHT – AIRA LAIVINA ARTISTS (Camden Fringe) ★★★★☆

Jazz Theatre after midnight feels like you’ve been invited down the rabbit hole by David Lynch and what you find at the bottom is a bag full of beautiful and bizarre tricks.

Performers Katrina Gupalo, Andrejs Osokins, Gabija Birina and Elvijs Endelis each bring a special something to this evening of cabaret with a twist.

Originally from Latvia they describe their performance as a theatrical experiment and what a fitting description this is. With no cemented plot we are presented with a dream like setting where each classic song is performed in between dance numbers and piano and drum duels.

From the beautifully haunting beginning where we are given an eerie rendition of Nina Simone’s ‘Wild is the Wind’ to the energetic finale of ‘Sunny’ you are not sure whose dreams you’re watching but it doesn’t matter.

Highlights of the night included an extraordinary rendition of ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ and watching the dancer return to the stage looking just as, if not cooler than Uma Thurman in ‘Pulp Fiction’

This is a company filled with confident performers and the risks they take with presenting these much beloved songs in such an unusual way pays off greatly. You find yourself leaving the theatre with more energy than you went in with and with a couple of classics stuck in your head.
